Help Heal the Hidden Wounds of War

On November 11th, we had the opportunity to honor all current and former members of the Armed Services. Our country’s greatness is built on the foundation of their courage and sacrifice.

On that day, and every day, the David Lynch Foundation is profoundly committed to supporting our veterans in their recovery from the hidden wounds of war. Thanks to the generosity of DLF supporters, over the last 15 years, thousands and thousands of veterans, VA staff, active-duty personnel and military families have enjoyed the far-reaching health benefits of TM® through scholarship programs - empowering them for a clear path to healing and peace.

In the year ahead, DLF will launch a three-year Phase III Clinical Trial on 600 veterans in nine VA health centers and hospitals to study the impact of TM for reducing symptoms of PTSD, preventing suicides, and reducing substance use disorder. The outcome of the trial will be used to help secure government funds to teach the one million veterans with PTSD and their families to meditate.

At MIU, we welcome and celebrate a rich diversity of cultures, backgrounds, identities, and values in a community that cultivates openness and togetherness, authenticity and respect, kindness and mutual support.

Our first campus-wide climate survey

MIU’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, in collaboration with the Diversity Committee, is administering our first campus-wide campus culture survey. We want to learn how students, staff, and faculty feel about the campus climate, especially around diversity and inclusion.

Will the responses be anonymous? Completely. Your responses cannot be traced back to you. The survey does not capture personally identifiable information unless you offer it in any of the comment fields. To further protect your anonymity, your responses are combined with many others and summarized in a report.

Will we be able to see the results? Yes. The survey results will be available on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion website, and we will announce the results as well as a link to the final report when they’re ready.

How will the results be used? This information will help us create a more welcoming environment for everyone on campus, especially those from underrepresented groups. It will help us develop our Diversity Strategic Action Plan, and it will support research, education, and programming that will advance inclusivity at MIU.

Protect yourself from Phishing

MIU IT is seeing an uptick in phishing emails. Please click on the link below to learn more about how to spot a phishing email. Phishing (pronounced: fishing) is an attack that attempts to steal your money, or your identity, by getting you to reveal personal information -- such as credit card numbers, bank information, or passwords -- on websites that pretend to be legitimate. Cybercriminals typically pretend to be reputable companies, friends, or acquaintances in a fake message, which contains a link to a phishing website.

Join Us at the “Genius Lounge”

Welcome to the “Genius Lounge,” a new audio series with Bob Roth, CEO of the David Lynch Foundation, author of the NY Times bestseller, “Strength in Stillness,” and 50-year teacher of Transcendental Meditation®.

Why do we call it Genius Lounge?

This audio series focuses on the genius of nature, from microscopic to macroscopic, including the genius of the human brain and body. The name was inspired by brain researchers who have identified key networks within the brain that underlie and foster the creative process. One such network is the “Default Mode Network,” which has also been called the “Imagination Network” and the “Genius Lounge.” Innovation gets its start here—and the practice of Transcendental Meditation accelerates the process by strengthening the creative networks within the brain and by removing the restrictive impact of stress.

In each episode, Bob shares a few minutes of exciting research findings on the brain, ancient and modern insights into consciousness, and/or inspiration to live a healthier, happier life.

Dr. Tony Nader on How to Deal with Loss

Creating space to accept our feelings and grow in wholeness

“We give space to ourselves. We give space to our emotions. If we want to cry, we cry. If we want to feel angry, it’s OK… And we accept that emotions can swell at any time.” —Dr. Tony Nader

ver the past year and a half, we have all been dealing with loss—of loved ones, of homes, of jobs and resources, of normal life and routines. To help guide us through these difficult times, Tony Nader, M.D., Ph.D., M.A.R.R., shares the steps we can take to understand and handle the range of emotions that accompany loss and grief, while becoming more anchored in our Self, our Consciousness, to grow. Here are highlights from Dr. Nader’s insightful suggestions in his October 10, 2021, Facebook Live talk, which included a Q&A with viewers. You can watch the talk in full on any of your favorite platforms

Dr. Nader is the global leader of the teaching of the Transcendental Meditation technique and related programs by 120 nonprofit organizations around the world. Two New TM Studies completed by MIU faculty that have been published online

Randomized controlled trial of stress reduction with meditation and health education in black men and women with high normal and normal blood pressure

Improving physical and mental health of college students through Consciousness-Based Education Marie Loiselle, PhD & Frederick Travis, PhD

Published online: 20 Oct 2021

This study examined whether studying in a Consciousness-Based Education institution influenced college students’ mental and physical health. Participants and methods: Undergraduate college students (n = 321) completed the Duke Health Profile, assessing 11 areas of mental and physical health, both as entering freshmen (2008–2014) and at graduation. The archived data was analyzed from 2019 to 2020. Results: Using ANOVA for all 11 subscales revealed significant increases in physical, mental, and general health, self-esteem (P < .001), perceived health (P < .017); and significant decreases in anxiety, depression, and anxiety-depression (P < .001). There were no significant group effects on pain, disability, or social health. Conclusions: Consciousness-Based Education was found to buffer the effects of stress on mental and physical health in college students. Consciousness-Based Education’s influence in lowering anxiety and depression while improving self-esteem and general health presents an effective tool for educators and administrators to consider in assisting students combating the stress of college life.

This program teaches burned-out New England health care workers how to meditate

Hadley Barndollar Nov. 2, 2021

The dark days of COVID-19 have pressed on, but Collins is doing much better now, thanks to a new coping mechanism. He learned transcendental meditation.

Five New England hospitals are hosting the national "Heal the Healers Now" program with the help of a $2 million grant to bring transcendental meditation to doctors, nurses and other medical professionals who've experienced magnified stress, trauma and burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Receiving the training are health care employees at Rhode Island Hospital and Miriam Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Brigham and Women's in Boston, and Stamford Health System in Stamford, Connecticut.

Transcendental meditation was created in India in the 1950s – a silent meditation done for 15-20 minutes per day. Dr. Tony Nader, who is leading the "Heal the Healers Now" initiative, said it's been extensively researched and yielded impressive results – decreased anxiety, depression and insomnia, paired with increased resilience and overall well-being.

He sees the mental health and overwork crises plaguing health care workers as a prime opportunity to spread the teachings.

"Health professionals are now being exposed to huge stress because they internalize what they see, what they experience," said Nader, a Harvard- and MIT-trained medical doctor who leads the international Transcendental Meditation nonprofit. "So much pain, so much death, so much crying."

In partnership with the David Lynch Foundation, Nader's trauma-informed program comes as the U.S. continues to battle the virus crisis and the medical sector experiences dire staffing shortages.

"Spending the 20 minutes twice a day in transcendental meditation really sort of helps to center yourself," Collins said. "I liken it to a bucket that seems to be overflowing all the time, and transcendental meditation sort of helps you empty that bucket so it's not always spilling over.

Paul McCartney knew he'd never top The Beatles — and that's just fine with him

TERRY GROSS November 3, 2021

On The Beatles' time in India to learn meditation

"Everyone, including us, was doing a lot of drugs and that can burn you out, as anyone who's done it knows. And so we were in the London scene and it was getting a little bit wearing, really, so I remember feeling very tired. All this activity, you never stopped. So when Maharishi [Mahesh Yogi] arrived on the scene, as he did in London after he was doing the kind of world tour trying to sell the idea of meditation, we went to see him and it was like a breath of fresh air because instead of just getting crazy, this was the opposite. This was going un-crazy. And I think all of us liked it. I certainly did. John and George [Harrison] did, too. And I think Ringo [Starr] did, too. And we ended up going out to India, to Rishikesh, for a retreat kind of thing. And it was a very nice experience. It was calming, which I think all of us needed, and it was spiritual, although it wasn't like you were worshipping a god. You were finding the truth or the calmness, I would say, inside yourself. So that was very good for us, particularly post-psychedelic."
